I saw gulls circling over something as I came out of the sea one morning. My first inclination was that is some poor washed-up creature hit by a ship's propeller but, as I reached down for my towel and glasses, all I could see was a large red shoe. Scouring the deserted beach, I could see no sign of its pair. The strong currents must have dragged it towards Ramsgate or Margate I thought. Their owner was missing too, drowned I presumed or walking around Walmer with one shoe.
